Australian Plants on Uganda Stamps

These stamps were issued in Uganda in 1991, in consultation with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne.

	Plant: Acacia pycnantha Family: Fabaceae (Mimosaceae) Golden Wattle Medium shrub or small tree to 10m. Golden ball-shaped flowers in spring. National floral emblem of Australia. Distribution: Occurs in NSW, Vic, Sth Aust. (naturalised in WA).
	Plant: Anigozanthos manglesii Family: Haemodoraceae Red and Green Kangaroo Paw The grey-green leaves are strap-like and up to 40 cm long. The red-stemmed flower spikes may reach 1 m high. Flowers are brilliant forest-green with a red base. Floral Emblem on Western Australia. Distribution: WA
	Plant: Banksia grandis Family: Proteaceae Bull Banksia Variable plant from spreading shrub 1.5 m high and 3 m across, to a tree 10 m high. Dark green leaves, toothed to mid-rib, grow to 30 cm long. Large yellow flower spikes, 30 cm long by 8 cm in diameter, occur in spring. Distribution: WA.
	Plant: Callistemon citrinus (Once known as Callistemon lanceolatus) Family: Myrtaceae Crimson Bottlebrush Stiff shrub or small tree to 6 m high with lanceolate leaves to 8 cm. Bears red flower spikes to 12 cm long and 5 cm diameter. White forms are also known. Flowers appear in late spring, summer and autumn. Distribution: Qld, NSW, Vic.
	Plant: Epacris impressa Family: Ericaceae Pink Heath Straggly shrub to 1m high. Pendant tubular flowers, white to pink to deep red. Flowers throughout year, mainly in spring. Pink form is state floral emblem for Victoria. Distribution: Occurs in NSW, Vic, Sth Aust, Tasmania.
	Plant: Eucalyptus globulus Family: Myrtaceae Tasmanian Blue Gum Medium to large tree to 45m high. Several sub-species are recognised. Juvenile foliage blue-grey, adult leaves dark green. Commonly grown overseas (eg California). State floral emblem for Tasmania. Distribution: Occurs naturally in Victoria and Tasmania.
	Plant: Gossypium sturtianum Family: Malvaceae Sturt’s Desert Rose Erect or rounded shrub to 2 m, often less. Rounded, glaucous leaves to 6 cm diameter. Hibiscus-like flowers, pale bluish-purple with red centre, to 12 cm diameter, occur in winter and spring. Floral emblem of NT. Distribution: Qld, NSW, Vic, SA, WA, NT.
	Plant: Swainsona formosa (Once known as Clianthus formosus) Family: Fabaceae Sturt's Desert Pea Trailing plant with grey, pinnate leaves to 15 cm long, on stems spreading to 2 m. It may be an annual or short-lived perennial. Bears pea-flowers, 5–6 cm long, of brilliant red with black boss on erect peduncles. Other colour variants are known. Flowers appear in spring. Floral emblem of South Australia. Distribution: Semi-arid areas of WA, SA, NT, NSW, Qld.
	Plant: Telopea speciosissima Family: Proteaceae New South Wales Waratah Erect shrub to 3 m high by 1.5 m across. Leaves are obovate, to 15 cm, often toothed or lobed. Bears red flowers in spring in large terminal inflorescences to 15 cm diameter and surrounded by large red bracts. Floral emblem of NSW. Distribution: NSW.
	Plant: Wahlenbergia gloriosa Family: Campanulaceae Royal Bluebell Herbaceous suckering plant. Dark blue flowers to 3 cm diameter in summer. Floral emblem of the Australian Capital Territory. Distribution: Occurs in alpine regions of NSW, Vic, and ACT.
