His PhD thesis at the University of Alberta was titled, 'Energy and water relations of some boreal forest mosses'. (NQ59644.pdf)

In the 1970s he worked with the Bureau of Flora and Fauna (now ABRS) and undertook the typesetting of 'Flora of Australia Volume 1, Introduction', which was done entirely using the CSIRO Cyber 76 mainframe computer using punch cards and reams of paper printouts.

In 1979, John published the 'Australian Biotaxonomic Information System'. Introduction and Data Interchange Standards. This was, in many ways, a forerunner of the later HISPID and Darwin Core standards.

He was on the management team of the Environmental Resources Information Network (ERIN), an Australian Government initiative to build a comprehensive continental-scale biodiversity information infrastructure.

While based in the UK, John was inaugural Head of Capacity Building at the UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre and then Program Leader, Biodiversity Conservation Information System, a consortium of 12 international non-government organisations.

John has advised on information network governance, protocols and standards under contracts to the Convention on Biological Diversity, European Commission, European Environment Agency, OECD, UNEP, and US Dept of Interior.

John retired as the inaugural General Manager of the Australian Government's Office of Spatial Data Management, a whole-of-government initiative to facilitate use of spatial data within government agencies.

In retirement, with his partner, he developed an interest in orchids and enjoyed discovering these in their local nature parks. With the help of a local ranger they arranged to get these orchid areas protected during a controlled burn. They then realised they had an opportunity to do more, and this led to negotiations with the ACT government ecologists on a monitoring protocol to conduct monthly recordings of matching burned and unburned plots, carried out since September 2014.

John's plant collections, deposited in the Tasmanium Herbarium, are mostly from 1972-1980, associated with his publication 'Nothofagus cunninghamii (Southern Beech) Vegetation in Southeastern Australia' (1984).
